Tibetan tattoos

I posted earlier offering to translate English words or mantras into Tibetan script for tattoos. I have been pleasantly surprised at the volume of responses. It's great to see such interest! I am happy to help anyone if I can, though my command of Tibetan is limited. I'm much better at individual words than sentences, for example. I can usually find a mantra for you in Tibetan script if you describe it specifically (like what deity it's associated with). I'm a Buddhist monk with a dakini mandala tattoo on my left arm. Depending on the word or idea, translation into Tibetan is not that hard to find. Dictionaries exist and Tibetan speakers can be found in the US. However, as I have said elsewhere, some words and ideas to do not have equivalents in Tibetan. As well, translating English names into Tibetan isn't really possible or advisable. Someone could try and give a phonetic transliteration but it might come out as jibberish or as a word meaning something quite different. But assuming you can find a Tibetan word you want to have tattooed on you, you are still left with the issues of calligraphy. It is NOT easy to find attractive Tibetan calligraphy on-line or in books. Many Tibetan dictionaries and textbooks are printed in plain and hard to copy fonts which might not translate well into a tattoo. There are also different styles of Tibetan calligraphy. You are best advised to consult someone who is an expert in this of you want an attractive Tibetan tattoo. That is why a number of people have advised going to inkessential.com . This is the only reliable on-line resource I know of. Some of you want an easy, free and reliable Tibetan translation service - well, it doesn't exist. My advice would be to consult an expert at both translation and calligraphy. You should be VERY sure you know what you are tattooing on your body. The same pitfalls that exist with kanji tattoos (see hanzismatter.com) exist for Tibetan and Sanskrit tattoos. Do your homework and spend the additional money to get exactly the right thing.

I'm trying to find a vertical "stencil" of the Chenrezig Mantra "Om Mani Peme Hum".... I've found several depictions of this mantra in hornizontal or split onto individual lotus petals... Hello, it took me a while to find the correct translation I wanted but now I can't get it into the specific script style I want. If you could help me out that would be greatly appreciated. The translation is " skyo ba rkyen ngan " which means for me means "trials and tribulations" but i think the exact translation i found was "distress and misfortune." Anyways, the script that I wish to translate that first phrase into is called " gyuk yig " script which is much more smooth and rounded then the more common " u-chan " script.

I have been reading some of the Dalai Lama's comments on compassion and heard him refer to the Tibetan word for compassion that seems to also imply hope for self. Hey, I have been to this discussion board before and this is a first for me, to reply to a topic, but I have been looking for translations for it seems like forever and I think I have found the answer. I found two sites, one for individual word translations --------------------- ( spokensanskrit.de ) Though this one really only gives preloaded symbols. Another gives you translations of actual texts ----------------------------- ( thdl.org ) Then references then dictionary then Tibetan and translation tools. I hope this helps you all out there looking for translations in this beautiful script. I do also suggest that you do check with tashi as stated before in another reply as to correct placement of tattoos and spiritual significance. Britt.

Mistakes are very very common so I would recommand you to go on tibetan-calligraphy.com and check on Lungtok Chokstang work.
