$10... you're fucking kidding right? That's barely 10%.. as a waitress, my sensibilites are offended.. I routinely (meaning, I did it before, and I'll do it again on Tuesday) give my artist a $100 tip... the original work was $300.. and Tuesday's work is going to be between $100 and $150..
Fuck.. my math skills are off.. that isn't even 10 fucking percent.. you SHOULD tip at least $50...
well speaking as a artist.and man i chewed a guys ass out hard over this because all he could do was wine about not getting one,i just wanted to pop the greedy bastard in the mouth over it.first off tips are not mandatory for any service they are a fucking gratuity.the best tips i get are the elatied smiles and returning client for more work to be done.true tips are awsome i have recived anywhere from there last 3 dollars up to 250.00.tips help pay for the bar tab lunch sodas and such.i never count my tip by percentage i tip by the quality of service i get. treat me well and nice do a good job and ill do my best to tip well.but the best tips are making the clients day life and such and having them return with other clients.put the art first.
That frightens me.. 'cause I routinely whine when people don't leave/leave really shitty tips.. but then.. I only make $2.13 an hour.. so please don't chew me out?
I had to comment on this one..sorry..
Tipping is not required but is ALWAYS appreciated!!! The best tip ANY artist or studio can get is a good reputation and return clientel. If the client is happy with the work and tells all their friends and 10 friends come in and drop 300 each...and they tell 10 more friends...that in my book is one HELL of a tip!!! Don't ya think!
When I recieve any tip I am happy that the client felt my work was worth more than the cost. All (most) artist feel that tipping is the clients choice and leave it at that.
M
Tip your waitress not yer tattoo artist!...Just kidding....As I have said before...the sign in my shop says "the only tip we want is for you to tell your friends about your experience here at Painted Angel."
Ya know what amazes me about waitresses is that even if they give you shitty service they expect that tip....NOPE! ain't goin for it...now I am a pretty big tipper....If I get good service I make sure that the waitress/ waiter knows he/she is appreciated.Tips are considered a part of their wages.
apperance my good man apperance is 80 percent of the sale you look good you feel good smell good and youve got that sale by the balls remember apperance is the first thing they see. just a way of buiss that i see. as far as a waitress position goes all i can say is kuddos to you hats of that is a very stressfull job and i respect ya for it.unfortunately that is one of the jobs where tips are so important. whenever i do feel i should have been tiped i think of this maybe they have had just a shitty day, thats all they had at that time, maybe i was foul in a bad moode.so many factors point is do your best off to the shop i go keep the post going kids IM BACK!!!!
I would think how much you tip depends on weather you plan to get more ink from that artist or that studio.
I just got a piece on my forearm, it cost me $250, I gave him a $20 tip, but I let him know I was comming back for more and all the extra I had at the moment was $20, we both treated each other with respect and he put his best into the work.
The tip was minor compared to the mutual experience and return business, IMHO.
I dunno.. I guess I just always tip? lol.. I did get pissed at a table the other night.. after they left.. there were eight of them.. and they left me a dollar fucking seventy five.. I had a bad night the other night, one we servers call a $2 night.. basically it means no table leaves you more than $2.. I still walked out of there with almost $60 for 6 hours worth of work.. or so.. what does that say to you?
i'm new to the website, but jeez, ya'll are making me feel bad...so far i've spent over $1300 over 3 sessions and have tipped $60.00 each time...and i still have more appointments in my future...i better bust open the piggy bank

No NO NO!!!!!
You shouldn't feel bad at all!! AT least you tip!! Its really nopt how much its the thought that you are showing appreciation...hell I'd rather have a handshake or a hug ( except from Erlich...hes a big ugly fugger! and he gives Irish hickeys!)
On a somewhat related note...
I once had a car stereo installed in my wifes car at the local future shop (nothing fancy, just needed a new cd player as the factory one died).
I have installed car stereos before, never had much a of a problem doing it. This guy took forever, going on that it was a different kind of wiring harness. yadda yadda yaddda..
To tell the truth, I don't know if he was just trying to bullshit to make it look like a huge job, or if it was an odd wiring harness.
Either way, I was about to throw him a few extra bucks for all the work he did... right up until he turned to me and asked if i would give him a little extra for all the work..
You should be happy with the job you do, if someone tosses u some extra GREAT! but I feel you should NEVER EVER ask for a tip!
Needless to say, after that comment he got the money for the install and not a penny more!!!
Baker sends.....
Agreed Baker...Nice to have ya back ya old slacker!!!
Anyway...we set a price for the tattoo ...thats what we expect...sure we love to hear "great job"...or "I am soooo happy" or "hey guys...my friend got a tattoo here and said you were really nice and did great work"....Thats all the tip we need...yes its nice to get money but dammit we GET paid!!!...we get paid a decent amount...we are not like the wait profession that gets a couple bucks an hour and survives on tips. However I DO like PRESENTS...food, booze ( Crown Royal please!) and expensive motor cycles ( I did a full back on a girl in KC in 1990 ...when it was finished she took my hand and led me outside where there was a black Harley sitting with a huge ribbon on it....that was the best present I ever got!!...well for just doin a tattoo!) ( except for what she gave me later that night...WHOOP!!!)I have told ya all this before but the most expensive thing I ever got for a tattoo was a fully paid funeral with all the woks...valued at @ 10 grand!
The standard gratuity (and I stress GRATUITY) is supposed to be 15%. If it's a meal and I payed less than 10$ for it usually leave a 2$ tip. If it's a bigger meal or more people I leave more (usually 5$ for two people). I do it this way , if you ask you get nothing but a smile and an excuse. If you don't ask and give me average service ~15%, great service and I've tipped up to 20$ on a 40$ meal. I usually have a price in mind for going into a shop. My only tat was quoted at $120, I expected $150 and he gave good service so I gave him the other thirty. My wife did two small tats on a customer at the shop the price was $100 and she got $120 and a refferal. That was her first tip after 2 weeks and about 10 tats. Tipping (any amount) is appreciated, but it should be based on service. If I was in an industry that provided tipping and didn't see much for tips I would question my service and try to improve it. Quality of service should equal quality of tip. IMHo
I agree, quality of service should equal quality of tips.. but it doesn't. Some people will leave you the same tip whether they order $50 worth of food, or $10.. and sometimes it's a good tip, sometimes it's really shitty. And I have gotten the 50% tippers off of like.. $40 worth of food before.. I got stiffed a few times last night.. it always sucks.. and I had an 8 top leave me $1.75.. Like.. it wasn't even worth bussing the table for it.. except, I had to do it to get out early.. I've gotten the impression that we get stiffed more than people at other restaurants.. I guess it's because we get our food out so fast, and that we DO have a drive through, people equate us with a fast food restaurant, and they don't feel like they have to tip? I mean, we do make everything except sides on order.. excluding french fries.. Our salads are premade.. but it's just a bunch of fuckin' lettuce in a bowl.. I stand firm in my belief that everyone should have to watch the movie Waiting.. and that everyone who eats out, even occasionally, should have to work in a restaurant waiting tables for a week.
I guess I sorta equate my ideas of tipping for waitresses towards tipping my tattoo artist.. I really loved my tattoo, and I tipped him very well. Here in a few days, I'm going to have it finished up.. and I'm planning on tipping him well again.. he's doin' my waves freehand.. this excites me a little bit.
Keaz...tattooing is not a profession where you should expect to be tipped...yes it happens...but is not required...now on both of the coasts it seems that tipping the tattoo artsist is a "normal" thing to do ...here in the Midwest it is rare ...maybe one out of 20 or less and don'y even try to blame it on OUR service...my people are champs when it comes to customer service and every person that walks in the door is treated VERY well...so that is not a factor...it just that some areas tip...others don't!!!
I said if I was in an industry where tipping was required... I'm not in an industry like that. I don't know what the norm is in the tattoo industry. I know the artist's make the bulk of their money from their work and not gratuities, but I also realize it's not required. I just try to be fair and just(at least in my mind.) Also if service was only average I also try to tell them what I didn't like about their service and compliment what I did like.
