Top Tier Portrait Artist

Bob Tyrrell in my opinion is the top of the line portrait artist in the world, but does anyone know of any other artist who come close to Bob in regards to realism and attention to detail.
Mike Devries
Nikko Furtado and Petri from Finland ( interview with Petri by my pal PDC here on tattoonow!
I have looked at a lot of mike devries work, the color is excellent, but it seems like he has a tendency to screw features up. I don't know I just don't like it. Look through his portfolio and you will see-- people with crossed eyes-- people with weirdly deformed chins-- and particularly often one eye disproportioned to the other eye. There are also lots of pieces that are purely excellent. I would be afraid to go in for a picture of a loved one and get a picture of a monster.
Monster? Mike is amzingly gifted and I am positive he could handle your request. I have seen tons of his work in person and I assure you if theres a wonkey eye its just the angle of the photo. Good luck with your search.-Joshua Carlton
Jeesh! What photos has this person been looking at? I have NEVER seen any of Mikes work look at all off, even some of his earlier stuff.
i love mike's work, i dont see what that guy is saying at all. also my top portrait artists are: nikko kat von d jen davis
Personally i would love to have Mike tattoo me, look up a few names at joshua carlton work and he is excellent also.
ANIL GUPTA. Beats most of the artist listed. .... Check out his work --------www.anilgupta.com or--------------------------------www.inklinestudio.com Ofcourse, Mike DeVries, Petri, Kat Von De(not a BIG fan though)....
I was looking trough Mikes work, and trying to find any crooked eyes etc. And I might get flamed for this, but in this pic http://www.tattoonow.com/tattoos/Mike_DeVries/tattoos_20670.html the eye does look a little crooked. Only one that I noticed. Maybe there is a explanation why it looks like that, and I am all ears :)
Mike DeVries is the motherfucking man. Dont hate. The guy is doing work like never seen by the naked eye. Who ever is talking SHIT you wish you can be "like Mike". Nikko is head to head with him and black and grey Bob Tyrell ,Tom Renshaw.
My pal Blacky in Argentina;
Forgot the link, http://www.fotolog.com/blackytattoos/
I have to say that I wasnt hating, maybe its a flash of the picture, the way the body part is bending, or maybe the person does have a eye like that. But I say this with all sincerity and respect towards him, that eye does look little weird...
I wouldn't say Anil's work is better than others mentioned here. It's good, but not THAT good. I don't think he can hold a candle to the likes of Tom Renshaw, Bob Tyrell, or Shane O'Neill.
Kyle Cotterman, up and comer...check out his work.
Blacky from Argentina is just INSANELY great! Long way to go though! ANil Gupta was cutting edge a few years back but these newer guys have just totally surpassed him by FAR!!!!
haha, thats some funny shit..i must say..i didnt realize how much shit talkin is done here on these forums.thanks johnny and jushua for backin me.but i got to say that girl piece done on jinxi i dont know if you guys read but that was done on her ankle really small and the angle of the pic taken is a lil wierd angle.i wish u can see it in person..and if Mr.toxyc is a tattooer i would love to see your work...check my site again and let me know which portrait looks like a monster 2 u . www.mdtattoos.com...lol
Thank you for clearing that out Mike :)
Hell yea, there is something seriously wrong with you people talking shit about Mike DeVries. His work is absolutely mind blowing. I cannot even fathom how somebody could look at his work and talk shit?! The only people that could are people that don't/can't understand the art of tattooing.
UMMMM I know I am not in your league but I had your back too.
Tim, are you referring to me? Your points have been right on.
man alive ive done portraits of people with all sorts of different features. lazy eyes, buck teeth, less teeth, fucked up hair, scars,....thats the thing, sometimes as artists we want to maybe fix little features but then its not a portrait, and it wouldnt exactly look at them....stop ripping mike up, he is well qualified and im sure his stencils are more detailed/precise than most....nobody has a symetrical face to begin with.
Nope, talkin to mike d.
I <3 Mike D. His working is amazingly sick. You can only judge so much from pictures, especially if it's a piece that wraps around a limb, it's virtually impossible to get an angle that shows everything well. Sheesh. Haters.
Well, I'm usually not one to comment on these forums.. but after reading the comments from toxyc I couldn't help myself. I'm not sure what pictures this individual is looking at on Mike D's website... hmmm maybe that's it, he/she has the wrong website... whatever the case is, I think the only one with a #%cked up eyes is toxyc. I have SEVEN portraits from Mike, three of my LOVED ones... and I'm here to tell you these are BY FAR the best tattoos I have, and have ever seen. Not one day goes by without someone stopping me and asking who did these amazing tattoos... moms, pops, kids, and YES also top rated Tattoo Artists. They are truly stunned by their beauty. There's not one flaw, not one strange feature, not one thing typical about them. If you ever have the chance to get inked by Mike you'll find out, take advantage of his brilliance.. get on his schedule NOW!!
for the folks too lazy to go to Mikes website here are some samples... Mikes coming this way next week, and I dont think we'll see too many monsters... My favorite from his last visit was this dog....
Also, that guy from Argentina is a bad ass too!
The Dali was the last one that blew me away when I saw it. You can see all the maddness and crazy talent in his eyes. And the color is amazing too. One of the best tattoos I have ever seen. Thats like the kinda tattoos that makes me love Dalis work and hold him as one of the best ever, and I dont get that much from his stuff really. But that tattoo makes me think that there is really something magical in his art, because it wouldnt look so good if thre wasnt.
I agree and will add to the list off the top of my head. Also, i think Anil is way overrated... Joshua Carlton Nikko Mike Devries Mike Demasi Kyle Cotterman Cory Cudney Dan Plumley Shane O'neill Tim Hendricks Robert Hernandez
robert hernandez!
Tim Hendricks is the next guest on Miami Ink...Still waiting for Joe C. Also, I am privledged to be with Mike D this weedend at Off the Map, I'm a huge fan of his talent. I've also sat with Joshua C, Carson Hill, and Tom Renshaw. What these artist brought to me was not only their skill and art, but also who they are, true down to earth people, not some inflated head cases like some artist can get, and that I've been with. I salute this new age of tattooing, these artist and thier ways and ideas. I salute Gabe for giving me the opportunities to sit with these artist coming from afar, to MASS. So many supreme artist, so little skin.....Peace...
thats why I am trying to get fat so I can get more work done.
I think Tom Renshaw is one of the greatest black and grey portraitists in the world. I've never seen a color portrait by him, but I am definitely partial to Mike Devries on that.
