Wanting New York Apprenticeship

7 messages · last activity 5/26/2010

Hey, i'm an experienced and determined artist, i am wondering if anyone presently in the hudson valley, westchester county, bronx, manhattan area was looking for some shop help that can lead into an apprenticeship. I have a little tattoo training from an informal apprenticeship and have been doing custom drawings for tattoos for a while. But still dont know when when it comes down to it and my mind is ready to be molded!!I went to the School of Visual Arts for 2 years for illustration. I have a large portfolio. I am incredibly determined to make it into the industry, if that requires me to scub toilets and wash tubes all day long, so be it! Thanks for all replies.
Your best bet is to go visit shops in person, and ask the owner if their taking on any apprentices..And bring along your portfolio to show your artistic abilities. You may have to start in a street shop, doing script, and flash for a few years..I know there's alot of tattooers in NYC,and i'm sure alot are making good money, but alot are probably struggling too..There's just so many shop's now,and you also have people tattooing out of their houses.. I was in a supply house in the city, where they sell machines to anyone who has the money..It's really sad that they allow that to go on..It's like selling surgical equipment to someone who isn't a doctor..
Love this site! I only wish I had a bit of your talent in me! Keep Inkin' Sillyone New York Hotels

yea some of those companies need the money tho... I feel you on that tho but some ppl become artists by doin the illegal work... I know alot of artists that started out of their house but its not the best thing to do cuz you can get into alot of trouble... i wish i could find an apprenticeship cuz im pretty good at some of that tattooin but i live in a small town that dont have many shops and im really interested in learnin the art... getten to a new town to find a shop is also a struggle... tattooin runs in my family but they havent been helpin me i wanna make it on my own steam but if any shops near jamestown ny needs anyone im ready to learn whatever is thrown my way!

I draw pretty well, never had any experience with tattooing anyone. I'm currently in the military. I'm preparing to leave honorably but after I leave, I want to get into the tattoo profession. I am a fast learner highly motivated and can follow directions. If you're willing to teach me please email me. I'd greatly appreciate it. Email me and I'll pass by your shop to meet formally.
