I was just wondering about this...aren't tattoos and scrapes very similar yet tattoos seem to have a greater chance of being infected(or seems to be). Im not holding into account allergic reactions.
Why is a tattoo subject to more infection than a normal scrape is?

Theres a lot more surface area would be my guess.
While tattoos are a lot like road rash or scrapes and cuts, they do differ. In fact, if you could treat a tattoo like any other wound, it would probably be less likely to get infected because it does not penetrate all the layers of skin.
However, since we have to be cautious about what we put on it and how we treat it, we leave it open to more infections. We don't but antibacterial oinments or creams on it because it would leach out the ink. We can't scrub it because that would muddy the ink. All we can do is wash it with hot water, mild soap, and keep it as clean as possible. Also, keeping it moist and if it is warm, that leads to ideal climes for bacteria (ie infection).
So it isn't as though the actually tattooing process causes an increase chance of infection but rather the after care and treatment we need to give it to make it look its best.
