good one.....
I'll say a tattoo artist is someone who mastered the art, a tattooist is someone who has been tattooing for a while but has not mastered it yet, and a tattooer is what the elders would call a scratcher...
Then again I could be wrong and this is a trick question and they all mean the same dam thing.....
Nope Legacy no trick and I think you hit em all on the head!!
Come on...nobody else?
Ummm.... Tattooer = Right Guard, needle and thread, kitchen table.
Tattooist = Has a licensed shop, most work comes from flash on the walls, owns a machine (or two or three), knows what the word sterile means.
Tattoo Artist = ...See all things Tattooist except does mostly custom work and is well recognized for it.....
disclaimer...Only my opinion.....J
So someone who isnt well recognized isnt a real tattoo artist?
Tattoo Artist
(a) Someone who tattoos for the love of art, for the thrills and fun from drawing--someone who enjoys art and hence deserves to have 'artist' in their name
(b) someone who is more artistic, has more skill than a 'Tattooist' or 'Tattooer'
Tattooist
(a)Someone who tattoos slightly for the love of art, enjoys drawing, but is also in it because it's a semi-lucrative career
(b)Someone who has some skill, not as much as a 'Tatto Artist' but more than a 'Tattooer'
Tatttooer
(a)Someone who tattoos only for money, not for the art or creativity involved
(b)Someone who has very little skill on the spectrum of artistic ability, not as good as a 'Tattooist' and nowhere near that of a 'Tattoo Artist'
(c)Someone who tattoos from their kitchen with a guitar string and has no lisence or certification to do so
Guess I didn't word that right.... The more look at it I can't even explain what I ment.... Now that I think about it, I'm not even sure what I ment.... Let me just say this instead and I will recant my previous ignorant statement.... Tattooer, Tattooist, and Tattoo Artist, are all different descriptive words used on this forum by a variety of different people with different knowledge bases of said subject.... I'm ready for my clipchord beating now. *cringes*
*searches franticly for a clipboard*
*hours later, having yet to find one*
...ah well.
I geuss im somewere between the top two ,i love the art of tattooing and mostly make my own designs .
I paint ,sculpt...metal and clay ...,draw, pinstripe ,make my own machines, oragami, metal fabricating, landscape art, etc.
But i do tattoo daily for money and I love the way im able to live because of the money.
lol, that's just my view of the words, whether or not anyone else agrees or accepts it, is individually up to them, but I too, would be (if I ever become a tattoo artist) a mix between the top two... Creation is my life... But, as I'm a welder (yay for getting a $12.25/hr job at 18 years of age, who lives with his parents and pays next to no bills lol) I've gotten used to having more money than I really need, and hence, money has sort of grown on me.* Heh.
*I find this to be interesting and have no doubt someone will take it in a saracastiv view, so before hand, no, I don't really have money growing on me, although that'd be really cool.
Device...Jwerk was alluding to a "CLIP CHORD"...not a "CLIPBOARD"....He is an apprentice and, as such, is regularly beaten with a clip chord for mistakes he HAS made, mistakes he WILL make and mistakes he is only THINKING about making...A clip chord is the wire that attches the tattoo machine to its power supply...said implement makes for a handy teaching device.
Just to let ya know...
However in the absence of said clip chord, a clip board will do nicely!...TAz
wow, I read that wrong. Thanks, btw. I learned something new! :-) lol.
Oh Christ and Crackers! More mundane devices of apprentice torture! Device, where's the love!!!!.... *frantically running in circles in my rubber room*
...oops. Sorry! If you get hit with said clipboard while a clipchord is not within reach, I'm sorry... I'm sure hitting back wouldn't be a valid option? Or not screwing up? Gah, I'd be fucked, I'm always messing up.... Or thinking about it, at the very least.
Just thinking about striking back can have disasterous consquences. There was this one time that I ..... *SHWOOSH - WACK!* .... Dammit! See what I mean!
Going against the consensus here, but I think :
There already is a term for guitar wire kitchen magician with insufficiant knowlage or equipment for either tattooing or the required sterilization...That individual is best described"scratcher".
Using the word "tattoo" in any label attached to this type is an insult to the term.
That said, None of the following definitions imply more or less years of experience or quality of work...any of the three types could conceivably execute a stunning tattoo:
Tattooer: Past apprenticeship stage, can work independently without a mentor. Basically a "tracer" who works from other artists flash, can make minor changes to flash, add a name to a banner, but will only tattoo after stencil is made and applied.
Tattooist: Same as tattooer, mainly uses other artists flash, but can also draw up original designs on demand based upon images and ideas brought in by customer. Creative expression almost entirely consisting of tattooing. ocasional freehand work, mainly from stencil
Tattoo Artist: Mostly works custom, or from self designed flash. Can, and regularly does tattoo "freehand" without stencil. Has a recognizable style.
Creative expression extends into flash, painting, other forms of art besides tattooing, though tattooing is main artistic passion/ means of expression. Considered an "artist" by most of his/her peers in the industry.
That's my 2 cents.
What catagory does someone that made a name for themselves reproducing other peoples art fall into, and i dont mean flash,i mean reproducing paintings or other medium artists work ....Boris,Dali,and many others ..you get the idea.
And im sure you all know the handfull of uber taleted guys that im refering to .
thats talented
...?
OH, You meant other than fucking awesome. Right. Gotchya.
Tattoo Artist: Grumpy. Introspective. Prima Donna. Little Black Cloud that will not "participate in your vanilla plan". Storms off a lot and says "I will be at the company condo in Barbados and cannot be reached!!!!"" Before snapping off his gloves and leaving with a big "SNAP" Noise.
A Tattooist is like John Wayne in "THE SHOOTIST". Says "You'll get what ya get, and ya don't throw a fit, Pilgrim"!
A Tattooer is a H8TER that does tattoos.
I don't know what one I am... damn... hmm. I'd go for a mix of the top two, as usual! lol.
