i am thinking about getting a tattoo. i live 30min from miami beach. should i go there and get a tattoo? are those guys good? i need to know becusae my last tattoos at another shop suck. i want a good artist to do my work.. any thoughts?
Go see Dee Dee at Pleasure Points in Spring Hill, FL. It's a bit of a hike, but totally worth your time and money (if you want to do it right, of course)!
Chris Garver is an excellent tattooer..He can do any style of work.. Kat does excellent black n grey work...Ami is really good with japanese work..Darren,and Nunez, are good too,but not as good as the other artists..You should check out Troy Lane@aaa tattooing.. in Kendall.305.378-5959 he does excellent work in a private studio.. I guess it depends on if u don't mind having a camera on you while your getting tattooed..
well seing that filming is over now I think only Chris N. Darren B. and Ami work the studio seeing Kat and Garver live in Cali but don't let the shit on the show rep thier real work. I have seen a lot of the work on some message groups about M.I. and the work looks pretty solid and I have talked to a few people that had work from Ami and they said he is laid back and very cool to deal with and he seems to be very good at the japanese themes as well as the tribal freehand stuff he did on the show. I know everyone has thier own opinion and all but the best thing to do is check out thier portfolios at the studio and check the other sites that the others posted and find what you personally like and then go with what you feel is best for you. Peace, Drake
Does anyone know the name of the artist that Chris Garver replicated on the episode "party all the time". It is of a girl and instead of tears, its blood that she is crying. Can anyone help me out! Thanx!
Mark Ryden is the artist
I am just wondering how to get an appointment at Miami Ink. I am from Canada and want to make the trip out with some friends and for our graduation celebration we want tattoos. We all love the show and the work that specifically Garver does. We really don't know how to get a hold of the shop or make plans to have them design something for us being so far away. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, are their prices comparable, or quite a bit more due to the popularity of the show? Thanks for your time if you have any info.
Garver doesn't work at the Miami shop unless they're shooting, the same with Kat Von D, he works at a hollywood shop that he owns whose name escapes me. To be sure they are booked months and months ahead of time, sometimes years. I spoke with a well known artist that I'm getting tattooed by at the beginning of last summer, and my appointment is just this month, and I was lucky (quite deliriously, wonderfully lucky). I would expect to pay 200-250 an hour with someone like Garver, maybe less maybe more (although I would start to question more than 300 an hour). He might give you a straight quote if it's something small and he doesn't need to go by an hourly rate, although the man you should speak to is him. But do expect to wait, and for a long time.
i would love to get a great tattoo, i have a few...um from a few years ago when i didn't know any better and needless to say i regret them, i dont regret having tattoos just the artist i chose. Im addicted to miami ink and i love garvers work, infort i live in the uk so would be really hard to get over there for appointment even if i could get one! anyone a tattooist to his standard in london? a want a black tribal dragon covered on shoulder blade...thanx for your advice x P.s i love japanese flowers and tigers but if any inew looks, ideas let me no.
Sorry, i have tribal work i want covered on shoulder, who would be a great artist to do that? and does anyone know if you can see the first tattoo under...im worried if i cover it up it will look a mess worse than before, basically i dont want to be able to see the orig tattoo

Hi Emma I'm also from the UK and as far as i know you can only cover black work with more black work! if you try covering it with colour the black can be seen through..but don't take this as gospel. i think the best thing you can do is go see a tattooist to see what they think hTh Mike
BTW...have you tried Flamin8? they're in London and i've heard good things about them. www.flamineight.co.uk HTH Mike
HI, THANX 4 YOUR ADVISE, I THINK THAT YOUR RIGHT ABOUT THE BLACK INK THING, IT MAKES SENSE. I HAVE HEARD ABOUT FLAMIN8 BUT WAS THINKING OF GOING TO ADAM THE PUNK IN MUSWELL HILL, DO YOU KNOW OF HIM??
No! does he have a web site?
My tattoo days are over when I got to pay $200 or $300??? An hour. Never happen
intoyoutattoo.com has some talented tattooers.. frithstreettattoo.co.uk stevebyrnetattoo.com elementztattoo.com thefamilybusinesstattoo.com jonnott.co.uk templetatu.com
mike the shop he works from is called new wave i guess .co.uk, actually have a look and see what you think. thanks jtats for the list of artists, i'll check them out and let you no what i think, however, i think it takes a great artist to do an amazing cover up...i've seen good artists do some really bad cover ups...but i suppose they're not too good then! biggie, i know its alot to pay for a tattoo and it does take this piss, but as im finding out years down the line, you get what you pay for..its def worth paying the extra to get something really special you can be pround of.
Good? They are Awesome. I'm from New Hampshire and I plan on going down this spring to get one. Chris Garver is my favorite, but his shop is in CA. He's only in Miami while they tape the show. But Yes go there and get one.
Dude, My sister inlaw's boyfriend got one there in 05, & I seen it when their came down for Xmas. Real nice work. He said they filmed while he got it done but, told them he didn't want to be on T.V. when they asked him to sign a release & everyone was cool about it. The deal with tatoos is just ask the artist, to see pics of past work. I've seen some real shitty work but, in general, most artists out there are good. It depends on what you want to. I wouldn't go Miami Ink just because it's on T.V. I've seen alot better work else where. Some of the finished work on that show is garbage, it cracks me up they would show some of it.
hey, whats up?Ami James rocks man,i love hem soooooo much,I love the way he deals with his work,he really believes in what he does... When i get my tactoo i would probley get it from hem some day,he's cool....Keep it up Ami... Ami is so hot, smart, everything,i love u man... Love always..... The rest of the guys are awsome to,got love for ya all... hugs from me ta you.........
i agree with angel 100%. Ami's work is really good, and he is so passionate about what he does, not only tattooing, but his fighting too. His fiery, nonsense attuitude i think is wicked!!!! Not to mention he is the hottest thing i have ever seen!!!!!!!! i want to get a tattoo done, and i would love to get it done by Ami! But to be realistic, i cant travel all the way to miami south beach to just get a tattoo. All the other artist i think are very talanted and are experts i their line of work. hope they show another series of the hit show in the uk .
I would love to get a tattoo by Ami and Chris they both have their own way of making a piece of art that means so much to someone look beautiful. I have 5 tatts 2 of my back one on my arm and two on my ankel. To fine someone down here where I live that does what those two guys do is impossible. The tattoo that is on my arm I designed and the artist twicked it a little bit, it is in memoray of my grandfather who recently passed after this past thanksgiving and to have Ami and Chris both do something to add to it and make it feel like he is right there next to me would mean so much to me. The reason as to why I pick Ami and Chris is beacause I feel they really understand the meaning of a memorial piece, they take their time and really put their all into this kind of piece. So to get a tattoo by them two guys would be awsome.
Dont be silly, while Chris and Ami are great artists, there are plenty of tattoo artists in new england that are just as talented (some more so in my opinion)! there are a dozen artists within a 2 hour drive of RI who are at the top of their game... they just arent on tv....
well, i went in for a small heart tattoo.. they have a $200 minimun. the guys were perverted and tryed ti hook up with me and my friends.. beside that.. they were assholes.. i didnt get the heart..
Litos and the guys at Forbidden Images in maimi are excellent and professional.
$200 minimum?...Now that is just crazy!!!
I visited the shop last time i went to south beach ....it was nice but alot smaller than they make it look on tv.......i made a peepee in thier bathroom
Wow! I wanna pee in their bathroom!!!...TAz
these guys are a joke.. yes $200 min. and you wont get tattooed by chris, chris or darren or omi unless you get casted.. it is really fuckin up biz on this beach.. i went from making $5000 a week to $3000 a week. alot of studios are suffering here.. i wish they would fold up..
Listen!!, i live and work in south beach, i am in the biz, and not show biz, the tat2 biz... i'll give you the poopscoop on miami ink "305INK" MIAMI STINK or OMI INK, lol anyway, the shop has like 5 or 6 full time tattooers jim, dan, morgan, bob, bill, and harry.. chris Garver and kat only here when they are filming, darren is here and then slipts and then leaves and splits,(rockstars) so whatever,,,omi works when he wants to and i heard from some friends he is still tattooing out of his house, he has such an overflow of work he books for his house i guess? oh he also just bought a house at this moment they are filming during the week, and only open on weekends for tattooing general public, they film casted people getting tattooed and give them hotel and gifts like gutairs, i tattooed the girl that got the red fender tattoo by garver? i didnt see the episode but was told by her fender gave her a gutair for the tattoo ...she went back a few months later to get a simpla outline of a dime sized star... she also said they gots a $200 min... she went to a shop down the road.. lol its crazy out there in front of that tattoo shop, 50 people lining up at the door... 2hours before they open..haha south beach has alot of good tattooers and ALOT of tattoo studios/shops.. aswell as alot of wack scratch shops and flea market crap looking shops. if you get a tattoo at miami ink its gonna be good but, you can take a lil walk down the road and get one done just as well and a lil cheaper.. alot of ( I MEAN A WHOLE FUCKING LOT)people actually tell me the took a vacation just to get a tattoo at miami ink.. and they where told there tattoo was going to cost $2,000 which was also done down the road for $450-500.. $2000 is thier magic number i sappose.. oliver peck has been in town filming with them, he's cool. i'm not sure how i feel about 305ink i know its making tattooing more popular as a whole.. i was in detroit and everyone was talkin bout miamistink this and that.. blah blah blah.... and a more conservitive crowd coming to get tattooed, becuase of 305ink alot of conservitive money is here for the whole industry to absorbe... i dont know..... but shit.... its fucking crazy over there, the tattooer make atleast $1000 a day, with out trying.. im makin that a week &workin all day,, what the fuck? these guys are cool and i give them props on thier success as rockstar tattooers, but shit man,$800,000 houses and shit? how long will this last? haha
305ink? whats that?
Peresonally I refuse to be mad at someone who succeeds..rockstar or not...they were not always rockstars and I know Chris Garver put in his years and paid his dues....No jealousy here folks!!...and if they can charge more ...hell this country was built on free enterprise....I say Good for you!!!! and congrats on your success!!!...TAz
yeah its a little expensive, but u will get what u paid for. no matter which artist u get, u are going to get the best work. yeah if u go u may not get one of the guys from the show, but there are other artists there that are just as good. i got a tattoo there a few months ago by dan and i love my tattoo, he did an awesome job, way better then what i expected and way better then i would have gotten for $85 at another shop. mine was $250. i am already planning on getting my next tattoo at miami ink. and there aren't always huge lines theres. i went on a friday and there was almost noone there and i was in and out in 45 minutes. and i got to meet yogi and take a picture with him and saw darren as well. all of the guys there are really nice. they make you feel really comfortable. its just a nice atmosphere in the shop. i would recomend anyone who wants to get a tattoo to go to miami ink.
Personally, the reason why I wouldn't get tattooed there is because it seems like I would only be a piece of meat. I mean that in the sense that super successful shops/people/corporations don't really have a reason to treat me well, I may be treated well by them if they have common decency (most people do) but it's a risk. I have to say while I was investigating my first tattoo I went to a lot of conventions, and spoke to alot of different tattoo artists and I got turned off alot by how people treated me. Plus, I'm not interested in being on tv or having anything superfluous interfere between me and the artist...some sort of sacred mojo thing has to go on between artist and client to make a tattoo a great experience for me (obviously actual artists will have a different opinion on that). Plus, I think I would feel weird answering the usual tattoo questions (Where'd you get that, How much did it cost, How many hours...) and my answer being Miami Ink. I don't know, feels a little strange to me somehow. Meh, I'm just quirky. ahlyn
Yeah D you make some valid points...some tattoo artists do not treat their clients and potential clients as they should be treated. And thats a shame... About Miami Ink...I can only speak of the only artist there that I really know and that is Chris Garver...Chris is a very humble guy , very personable, that is unless the fame went to his head which I seriously doubt...He just ain't that way... By what I hear of Omi or AMi or whatever it is...is that he is a lot more mellow than is depicted on the show...I think his attitude is probably embellished on purpose for entertainments sake...it is not a documentary, its a television show meant to entertain.Wouldn't it be boring if no one had a personality on the show?
Of course! And really I love the show because it is just that, a show. If I were to think that that shop is exactly the same when they aren't filming I'd be an idiot. Honestly, I've just heard more bad reviews than good from people who've been there. Most of the people that had bad reviews had been heavily researching their tattoos, and sort of on a lark got a tattoo at Miami Ink, they tended to have bad-sort of blah times. Whereas other people who have researched perhaps somewhat less got swayed by the general intrigue of the place and the assurance that they would get a reasonably good tattoo (after all, I have yet to see a -horrifically- bad tattoo on the show or elsewhere) and they had a wonderful time. I think they fill a specific niche within the tattoo industry with which I don't fit exactly, which isn't to say it is more valid than any other niche. I'm very exacting in my life, at least I try to be, and honestly if I hadn't been engaged in the same way as I have been with my tattoo I would be dissappointed. If you caught me earlier on in the process I might have told you, oh of course I'd love to be on/tattooed by someone from Miami Ink. I think being/learning about being tattooed has drastically impacted my life in a sort of generous way that makes me want people to have as fufilling a relationship with my tattoo that I've had. I hope this makes sense? ahlyn (Or the infamous D, no two ee's please)
Anyway D you made the right decision obviously...I don't think you could have chosen an artist any more perfectly suited to your work than Guy...just perfect ...thats all I can say!!...Lucky fugger!!!
Yes, it was pure dumb luck, and shhhhh, I'm already a nerd, I don't need to be a nerdy fangirl too. I feel like I've shot my mouth off enough as it is! ahlyn
so its a 200 dollar minimum at Miami Ink? GOOD! all tattooers should be able to ask that if they are knocking out custom gear. jesus, i remember enough of the scratch palaces in SF had a 200 dollar minimum and that was in 98. my minimum is 50 dollars, thats average here in Scotland. i wish to sweet f*ck that it were normal to ask for 200 minimum. even 200 US is not that much in the UK. barely pay the gas bill. and in the end, if we don't like whats on the tv, we can turn it off or turn it over and watch the wrestling instead ;)
I have been gearing up for my next tattoo for sometime. Since watching the show (and walking by the shop everyday,) I have been thinking Garver would be the man, jus cause I know he is for real, and I can count on him delivering a sick poece. Not just due to hisartistic notoriety, but also cuz he is calm, cool, and collected. Thats the kind of artist you want permanently impressing ink into your skin. Anyway, I am curious to know how the process works for getting to the design hammered out. How do you initiate that process when Garver is in Cali? How is the design itself priced? I know what I want for a general idea, but dont know exactly what it will look like so it needs some development to come alive. Also, if anyone has any comments, I would really appreciate it. I want a tattoo that will signify my connection to life, it has great spiritual meaning to me. It will be a black eagle, designed in shapes, defined by lines where there is an absence of ink. I want it flying away from you, wings stretched out across my upper back. I want detail to be incorporated in the piece, but I want it to be more of a symbol than a picture of an eagle. How do I incorporate both? I also want red flames intertwined in the design to give the tattoo some flavor. I guess I just need an artist to collaborate with that can add their own influence and truly turn it into a work of art. Thanks! A Ron
alright first people you need to understand, they should not get anymore praise than the other people that tat over here in South Beach. They do just as good of work as all the other 100 tattoo stores around. A 200 dollar min. is crazy, you can seriously walk down the street and find something better. Walk down Colins, Washington, Lincoln.. anything and you will find better Tattoo shops that do the same great work a lot cheaper. People are just going to them because they see them on tv, they are "celebrities", and for whatever stupid reason. Listen, seriously think before you go. BUt for everyone that doesnt care I walked by there today.. this is their address and phone number. 717 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, FL 0.9 mi S - (305) 531-4556 and the chances of you getting Tat by Chris, Darren, Ami, Garver, Kat are limited.. they arent the ones that are working all the time. It's like they are "actors", they do great work--but only work WHEN SHOOTING! You will most likely get done by the other people that are working there. So why spend so much money to wait in line for 3 hours to get tat by people you don't know?
of course i would i want a tattoo from kat she rules and shes a nice person i wish i could get to miami i have heaps of tatts from south coast tattoo in australia my tattoo artists name is adam hes the best i think miami ink rules i never miss a show they rule from adam in oz.
has anybody seen a picture of flower tattoo made on the side of a girl's torso?, can't remember the episode or the artist. please help
I got a tatoo from Jim at Miami Ink..He took my rough design and created exactly what I wanted. The tatoo is small but a work of art, he also painted some of the large paintings in the shop. I would recommend Jim(James Hamilton) highly.
I think if you are going to do it really thin kabout the piece you are getting . At Miami Ink I have seen a lot of their work. If you want to watch the show on TLC. The artist I like is Chris Garver.
hey i was wondering how much it would cost for a tattoo at miami ink because i want my shit done rite and u guyz do a good job and i want a huge mural on my back with my name, my grandmas pic, moms pic, money ,cars , guadelupe, a cross and some designs.... call me (708) 285-1100
You sit right there and I'm sure they will call ya!! Jesus!!!
Taco, I do all the pricing at Miami Ink, given your detailed info you provided your looking at $20,000 plus tip......lol
One more thing I gotta add....there are alot of quality shops in YOUR area. Just cause a few talented artists have a tv show dont mean that the artist in your area cant do a great job. just my 2 cents
Hey there its gud to know that you wud like to get a tattoo.Aome thoughts on that.Gues you have some idea of what iam saying.u wud like to have tattooed of a animal, bird, freeart ar something like a psychadelic design but i have been to india and there i found a art which is designed in ma computer. You might find this interesting if so then you can get back. cheers Matty.
What the fuck did that person just say? Help me out here! It could be important...or ..ummmm something
Just be patient and let the sugar do it's thing Taz.... It will all be clear soon enough....
People, people, it sounds like a lot of jealous people out there to me! I understand that you can get a tattoo down the street for far less. That makes sense. There is a reason why Miami Ink is on t.v and those "far for less" shops are not. Althgouh in their fairness I am sure they do great work. I see it like so, everyone doesn't have to pay to drive the top of the line BMW, I mean after all, there are Fords and other cars that will get you where you have to go just as there are other tattoo shops who can do great work. You pay for what you get. If it is on my body, I want what I want. I would bet Ami and the ones who are only there when taping is going on has already paid their dues and we would take advantage of the same opportunities if presented to us.
I don't know why but this thread pisses me off for some reason. I really think it just comes down to people being ignorant and lazy. They watch the show and only know from what they see from tv. People want to go out and get the exact designs they see from specific shows!?!? Thats pure laziness and is kinda pathetic. Think about it, make it personal, make it meaningful- don't just try and copy someones elses peice. And to think that the people at Miami Ink are the absolute best in the biz without even researching other artists or artists in your area is lame. I mean christ, take a browse through some of the portfolios on this site. Better yet, name me an artist or style from Miami Ink who you think is top notch and i will match their quality or surpass it with a tattoonow artist, probably with ease.... Sorry just venting...
I didn't get to see the show when Kat tattooed that Grilled Cheese Sandwich on that woman..but I heard it looked like shit. It just goes to show a few things...one, Kat doesn't specialize in Grill Cheese Sandwiches...two, it goes to show how lame the show is getting....and three, the show is RUN by the producers and someone was probably "forced" into doing the tattoo just for ratings. I would like to think that type of tattoo would be refused by most competant (sp) artist.... M
Tatt, while I don't dispute the fact that the crew on Miami Ink do some very good work, they are by far NOT the only good Tattoo Artist around as it would seem some of the posts are about. I think seeing it on tv just makes a lot of folks who really don't know much ABOUT Tattoos assume they are. I really haven't watched it but 3 times and don't much care for the whole concept- it is not really what the Tattoo world is 'all about' by a long shot. As to your comment regarding 'People, people, it sounds like a lot of jealous people out there to me!', I don't think that's the case neccessarily so much as the more likely fact that that shows gives 'em LOTS of exposure-how much would advertising that gets you in front of that many people cost another artist? And as to your comment 'and we would take advantage of the same opportunities if presented to us.', I don't believe I agree with you there either. I agree that those perhaps more interested in the money may well jump at the chance to be a part of that show but personally (and I know I'm NOT the only one) I would not be a part of that show but then again, I'm not only 'old school' but I also respect my profession and know how many other good tattoo artists are out there to which programs like that are an insult, so to speak. Personally, I tend to agree with Img, (Good Post) although I missed the episode where Kat tattood a grilled cheese sandwich on someone and just 'why' anyone would want THAT totaly escapes me (or why Kat would waste her talents on it) Just when ya think you've heard it all, ya know?...Doc
damn, i was planning not only a grilled cheese sandwich tattoo but a whole deli tray...a pastrami and swiss on rye backpiece laying in an open field of lettuce and tomato...jars of condiments....maybe even a pickle on the side....whaddya think???
Y'all are making WAY too big a deal about the grilled cheese....haven't you ever done a really weird tattoo on somebody who had a REASON to get it done?...I did a saltine cracker on a guy who owns a cracker company years ago...I did a hoagie on a guy who just bought a deli....ever try to tattoo a sandwich that LOOKS like a sandwich...not the easiest thing to tattoo! People get weird shit every day..it can't all be hearts, roses and skulls!
Naturally I know it ain't all hearts, roses and skulls and am damn glad it isn't or I'd have died of boredom by now but still, a grilled cheese? And nope, never tried to tattoo a sandwich, frankly, never even thought of it until I read that post but, then again, I'm getting old and don't understand much of what people are really thinking these days and that certainly includes what some folks are getting tattooed on 'em. Different strokes for different folks I guess and some certainly are 'different'. Bear in mind, I'm one of those 'old timers' who still believes a tattoo should have some real meaning behind it, like those 'examples' you (Taz) mentioned. Guess I better double up on my Geritol, huh?....Doc
i'm gonna get a tatt off the grill cheese lady's toothless grill
MMMmmm... Grilled Cheese.... Now I'm hungry, I think I'll go make some.(I can whip up a mean grilled cheese sandwich). P.S. A good reason might have been if it was a loved one's favorite food.
I am getting my first tat, and although I would love to have Miami Ink do the inking, I want to do it sooner than later! I live in Northern Cali, and am looking for someone just as good... any recommendations out there?
Id check out the artist list on here. specifically jason tyler grace and holly ellis's they have some awesome tattoos in their galleries and they are both in san francisco which is pretty close to sonoma.
I'm not only a few blocks away from Troy Lane shop, but I have seen his work and is he "one of bes" t artist in Miami. He is booked for a few months and only artist at his studio on US1 but the wait might be worth the ink. In the other hand I registered to the Miami Ink a few weeks ago, at Coral Springs tattoo convention booth just to fuck around and please my girlfriend "ohhh you should register" Last thing I thought with my bad luck at winning shit is that they will call me...they called me twice, and told me to register online...OOOPS they also ask me to pay mad dollars for the tattoo while I have to make some shit up about how i came up with the design, and what the tat means to me...not only that, "A non refundable 100 bucks is due now"...wtf. Miami Ink is the last place I will think for some serious work, unless you want to entertain people at the same time while you follow the plot. The dudes are good artist, thats it, but Troy Lane kicks them out of the water but naked. Hit me via email if you need help.
Gabe 305 is Miami's Area Code. We also have 786.
Taz I think you should let the Miiami resident tattoo artist folks talk based on what they see and experience every day. It may sound like jealousy to you, but man that show killed the tattoo vibe on the beach. I got pierced there in 97' and the shop was underground and it looked like at tattoo studio, not like a "Hair salon" like it does now. Most of the people that get tattooed at the show are people that would never think of a tattoo if it wouldn't been for the show. Think of people cranking work for years in South Beach, trying to raise the business as such an all of the sudden TLC puts the flag on a shop, drops some dollars to make it look like a Hair Salon and brings some Artists from LA to make it look cooler. Not only that one of the artists wears sun glasses inside o the store and is accused of being hangover every morning at the shop. Damn!!!! I would not like to be tattooed by a person that still smell like alcohol. Miami Ink is not a Miami Like Tattoo shop - lets get it right!!!!. - Wooden floor: Tile please for easy disinfection. - Booths: customer are next to each other, there is not division separating sessions - Machine barrier: I don't recall them covering the machines. - Ami Skater: Ami, I respect your boxing skills, but please DO NOT ATTEMP TO SKATEBOARD EVER AGAIN. I guess we see what is really going on here in Miami, we are not just hating. Sometimes people needs to walk in other people's shoes. Cravink
"Not only that one of the artists wears sun glasses inside o the store and is accused of being hangover every morning at the shop. Damn!!!! I would not like to be tattooed by a person that still smell like alcohol. Miami Ink is not a Miami Like Tattoo shop - lets get it right!!!!" those are actually VERY serious allegations you are implying. i wear sunglasses in certain places because i have sensitive eyes and bad eye strain in bright areas.
KOOCHIE Yeah me too, when the sun light hits I ware my shades, but not when I am at work. I don't stink like alcohol and non of my employees need to wake me up to go and take care of an appointment I missed for partying hard. Read my post again.
Cravink....Maybe I just didn't make myself clear...Now I have spoken to a few of my friends in the biz in that area and although they pretty much have no respect for the "Miami Ink" phenomena...not one thinks it has affected their business...that shop ( whatever its real name is ) just doesn't do so many tattoos that it could affect the industry in that area....it IS only one shop and by my understanding id prohibitively expensive....I just do not have a problem with anyone cashing in so to speak...you must keep in mind that it is a tv show....granted I think Ami is a dickhead with a real attitude but hey I've met a whole bunch of "walking dicks with ears" so to speak and none of them had a tv show!! Just my couple of pennies worth!..T
Taz I understand your side of the situation, but trust me, I am not at the beach anymore, a few miles away, but I passed by there the other day and there it was a long line outside of people wanting to get TATTOOED and SPOTED on TV. THis is what we are talking about. They are not tattooing because they are good, they are tattooing because of their fame. There are greater studios on the beach, just a block away from them!. They are just taking advantage of their fame to over price, but again is up to stupid people to paid the fee. Bottom line: a) want to get tattooed? or B) Want grandma and mon/dadddy to see you on the screen at a "Hair Salon" tattoo parlor. It is really sucky to talk about the Miami Ink Factor with customers every day. That just didn't exist before
And I understand your point ...after thinking about what you said I guess I kinda have to admit that maybe I was in the wrong and dammit I hate to do that LOL!!! I guess I put most of my eggs in Garvers basket who I have known for many years...he has always been a stand up guy and not one to price gouge and by what I hear that is what is happening down there. Take heart in the fact that the show will not last forever and Miami Ink will go by the wayside...it sucks that the situation is affecting the "real" shops there....sorry man!
By the way for those of you with any sense who are looking to be tattooed at Miami Ink....consider these things... out of the artists that work at the so called "Miami Ink" shop only two are more than just ok...Chris garver and Kat Von D....get a tattoo by anyone else there and it will only be a decent tattoo...with Chris and Kat it will be an exceptional tattoo! Chris and Kat actually work in Chris' shop in Cali...if ya go there I assure you the rates will be but a fraction of what you would pay at "Miami Ink" There are MANY exceptional tattoo artists in the South Beach area some light years better than Ami James or Darren Brass...and much much less expensive...don't pay a premium just so TLC can use your video on television to make lots of dough...it just ain't right!
I would'nt pay an inflated price for a tattoo.Don't care who's doin' it.BUT the show has seemed to have an influence on the public, seems more people are getting tattooed than ever.I'm all about people making money, it's good for the trade. Just not all that crazy about the whole speacial meaning thing that seems to popped up.What happened to getting tattoos just because?I don't need to have a special reason to get inked,I just need the dough.
OMG we are on the same page now :D!
btw I am out to sushi, any one for carry out?
thank you for your Nor Cal recommendations!
No problem, i was thinking about getting a tattoo from one of them too.
Doc John, let me begin by saying I don't think you would pass an opportunity to make your business shine via t.v. I mean after all it is all about exposure. It does not mean you are in the game to do people wrong and maybe you are not one of the jealous people. I do know you need money to pay your bills as well. So to deny yourself that opportunity I don't believe you would. I also understand that as with anything you should shop around. I am not saying that no one else can't do a job as well as Miami Ink can. I agree the grill cheese looked crapy to me as well.
Wow so many post about a TV show! Would I consider getting a Tattoo at MI, who knows, I like Garvers Tattoo's but the asian style isn't what I am looking for, Kat would be more my style as she does a very good Black and grey. I do know a few Tattooist and I do believe they would pass up a Miami Ink style show, They do this for the art, and are well paid for thier experience. They do not need the publicity or the extra work. anyway that is my 2cents tonight. Blacktri
Thats weird now that you mention it. I have NEVER seen a commercial for a tattoo studio. not once and for understandable reasons. tattooing is a very serious art form and having it mainstreamed isnt something thats going to do any good. the personal stories are nice and all but for the most part all these shows seem to do is cheapen the art form. imagine your favorite painter or even tattoo artist showing up on some cheesy commercial trying to sell you their wares. it would make me lose a little respect almost you know. Great art speaks for itself and i think t.v. is far too tacky a medium for tattooing or any real art to have a need to be sold on.
I watched it last night for kicks. Dumbest fucking thing I've ever seen. This blonde babe comes in with a full-on team of look-alike friends for moral support to have a pink star put on the back of her neck? The koi-dragon that the main guy did was not bad, but that's about it. Not bad. Not amazing, not bad. Would have expected better considering this is supposed to be the hottest place around. Hmmm.
I Think That show has done a lot for the Tattoo Industry, People see that not every great Tattoo has to be Freehanded. ( keeping it real ) The show has a positive view of skin art, Too bad the general public doesn’t have much of a chance at finding a place so upbeat & professional. I understand about them having a meaning for every freaking Tattoo, But its much better than the true drama & badmouthing. I have no doubt its there after the cameras are off, But the general audience doesn’t know that until they travel to a local studio thinking they are going to find that positive atmosphere. I cant believe I’m reading this much crap about Miami Ink Real Tattooist when you have Cory Hart turning the Industry into a Commercial chain like wal-mart. Now don’t get me wrong I have no problem with Cory But I find it unsettling the way people buy their way into this business and they don’t even tattoo much less to turn it into a American Franchise. Didn’t Easy Rider try the same thing back in the 80`s ? I’m sure his outcome will be the same result.

Miami Ink is decent, they have a good number of artist. But like i said before they are just decent (except Chris & Kat) I get all my art done by Roger at Tattoos by Lou, the guy is a good artist and has a great personality. In my eyes once you get a Tattoo you are art, and thats why you want to have a nice healthy relationship with the artist that does all your work, you dont want a tattoo just so you can be on TV, i've passed by Miami ink over 4 times just to see what the fuss was all about, and i can tell you all the times i have been there and i have yet to see any of the guys that come out on TV. So for all of you out there that want tattoos, research chances are there is a good artist around where you live.
Tatt, regarding your statement 'Doc John, let me begin by saying I don't think you would pass an opportunity to make your business shine via t.v. I mean after all it is all about exposure. It does not mean you are in the game to do people wrong and maybe you are not one of the jealous people. I do know you need money to pay your bills as well. So to deny yourself that opportunity I don't believe you would.', while I suspect I understand what you meant, I actually meant what I said and don't particularily appreciate being called a liar, thank you very little. True enough, exposure is a good thing, I just wouldn't want the kind of exposure that show gives, it's false and a serious slap in the face to many dedicated professionals, of which I am one, who never got into this for the money in the first place. As hard as it might be for some folks to comprehend, some of us have principals and those principals are not for sale or even for rent. Again, I would not be a part of that show if they paid me double my normal rate and blew me at the end of every episode. I've never aspired to be an actor, I'm a Tattoo Artist and damned proud of it. I have been involved in this profession more than long enough to see what 'success' can and has done to some folks and what those 'shows' are doing to the profession. While it is true that I'm not making as much as I used to, I am at least doing something I love and take pride in and since I have very little respect for those kinds of shows, I could not ever be a part of it, whatever you might think. I went out on my own and got my own studio over 24 years ago because I did not like being told what to do by owners who more often than not did not care about the 'art' so much as the profit margin and rarely really cared how good the work was, as long as it 'passed' and they made money off it. And while I may not be rich or famous, anyone who knows me knows how I respect this art and never gave a shit about becoming 'famous' in the first place and I'm far to old to change at this stage of the game. Personally I kinda think those shows make a joke out of my profession and I for one do not appreciate that or think it is really in any way 'good' for the profession in the long end. Of course you are entitled to believe/think whatever you want but I do object to being called a liar, you don't know me or you'd know how wrong you are...Doc
Doc ...RIGHT ON BRO!!! Pretty much my sentiments all the way buddy!!....Would I take the chance to be on a tv show ?....I would be lying if I said that (under the right conditions) that I wouldn't...hel I would jump at the chance but I assure you that it would have to be a LOT different than MI or Inked!!
I was just talking to an old friend last night, and he's planning to go to Miami Ink to get a portrait by Kat. I told him since Bob Tyrrell is in the city, he may as well book with him, or if his heart was set on it... book her, but not at M.I. buuuut..... I guess there's something to the "show" aspect.. even if he's not on TV, some people just want to say "I got it done at this cool and famous place".... and I guess that's understandable. Just something I wouldn't do.
People mostly Artist have been flocking to “ Famous “ Studios covered by the magazines for years. And I personally find them ( Magazines ) Insulting to the Tattoo Industry, A Stage is a Stage.
Josey when Tattoo magazine was incepted it was intended to bring the tattoo industry out of the back alleys and into the the light of legitimacy and it succeeded admirably only to be followed ,as all successful ventures are by many copy cats ...some bad some very good...Almost all businesses have at least one usually more industry mags...it just that the tattoo industry exploded at the time of the inception of tattoo mag....its a two edged sword kiddo....it was both good and bad for the ancient art of tattoo...but I think mostly good...T
Taz, while I tend to agree that most of the Tattoo Magazines are essentially good for the profession, my problem with at least some of 'em is the fact that many of 'em have ads for tattoo equipment in them and the sad fact I've seen all too many with articles about various artist who sure make it seem like that artist is great by what they wrote, then they show pictures of their work that is marginally good or substandard. By and large, I think most of those mags are more interested in making sales/profits than they are about the Art, so I guess I'd have to agree with the 'two edge sword' comment..Doc
Blimey it sounds as I have been going about this all the wrong way! I've been watching the show, looking at specialist mags and specialist websites (including this one for my research into getting my first tattoo) and I thought it would be really smart to get mine done at miami ink, the plan had been for my mum and I to have a fab holiday in the U S of A and go to the shop together then recuperate in the Bahamas! She has always wanted a tattoo of an alligator (she studied them for a hobby even though we don't get many in scottish highlands!) but sadly she died recently so I was going to go it alone on a memorial trip. After reading everyone's comments I might stay closer to home and take the America trip later on and just hang out at the Beach in Miami instead of getting sunburn in a queue at the shop! I thnk I just got caught up in the hype, I'll just have to find another way of getting my fifteen minutes of fame. Thanks for helping me back to reality xx
And Doc I agree I was talking about when Tattoo mag first came about there were no ads then and of course the sell out came! So yeah we agree Doc!
yah i would because chris garver is the best in the world.
*Garver the best in the world* ????? Maybe you should check out some of the work done RIGHT HERE!! Look through the links above....then you will see what I mean... Yes Garver is good, I don't disagree, BUT don't count the chickens before they are hatched!!! M
Garver-4-God.....Furnt!
actually i'm from the philippines and i've watched some of the episodes of Miami Ink... i really want to be tattoed by kat... well, that's about it, i think its just a fantasy for me! hehehe! coz its very expensive to go to miami or cali and even more expensive to get tattoed by those artist,,,
YEAH! You should definately go, I think that they are the best of the best... have you ever watched their t.v show? My friend and I are actually going to drive to Miami for our senior trip this year and get a tatoo together...i think it would be a great idea for you to go! let me know what ya think.. -Chelsea
buddy, I am a tattoo artist from Miami, know the shop and met some of the artists from the show... They are not the best, but not the worse, They have some talented artists but at the same time they have average. The people you see at the show, are only available when they are filming and take customers prior auditions (yes they need to check you out first). During the days, artists that you have never heard off will most likely take care of your tattoo need. Sorry to disappoint.
Okay im going to flat out say it.FUCK MIAMI INK. if you can look at the galleries at all the AMAZING artists featured on this site 90% of them have galleries that blow anything done on miami ink (and thats including kat von d and garver) out of the fucking water. I mean fuck does t.v really make people so stupid as to that they would ignore countless brilliant artists because someone half as talented and twice as prickish was on T.V. and then probably get charged triple whatd you pay for a tattoo done by someone just as talented.
and again im not saying they arent all very talented but just not anything that deserves the fame and recognition and the people traveling THOUSANDS of miles to get tattooed by these guys.
this is an old topic, but i want to put in my 2 cents anyway, in case anyone else is considering the miami ink thing. i have no opinion about the artists, if you think one of the artists is the best choice for the tattoo you want then go for it, but if you want to do to be on the show, then beware. one of my best friends was on the show and they made her look like an idiot. i mean, she got an awesome piece and had a lot of fun, but when she watched ther episode she was in shock at how much of a stupid girl they made her appear to be, and the way they edit it and delete things that she would say, just to make her sound like a dumb flirtatious girl, when she really is anything but that. for example, they recorded her talking for several minutes about her tattoo and what it meant to her and why she chose ami to do it, because of his skill and the kind of art she wanted and she thought he would be able to give her a great piece, and at the end she mentioned that ami was cute and fun. but they cut out all of the important stuff she said and just made it sound like she was saying "i picked ami because i have a crush on him!"... they also give you really corny things to say and much of "reality" of this show is faked. like situations you see between the guys are set up scenes that they record just to make it seem interesting. get me? i dont know that they make the guys who get tats on the show look very dumb, but if you watch the show you'll notice they make a lot of the girls that come on look like idiots who are just there because they're in love with the artists. which is cocky and stupid if you ask me.
since i have watched miami ink, i have seen many beautiful tattoos!!! i have one on my back that is from a long time ago and would like to add to it to make it look like a nice piece of art. however, i am not willing to just go to any tattoo shop to get it (and hope it comes out right)! does anyone know of any good artists here in the denver metro area? thanks!

Denver, try searching the forum archives. Off the Top of my head, Jeff Keopp at think tank tattoo, That Scary Place tattoo, and Boulder ink. I know there are more, so search the archives! And while the post that follows you might think the artists on tv are sell outs, you have to admit its motivated people to not settle.
I want to get murdered in Miami so cute guys from CSI will investigate my body....oh wait, that's just a tv show. Personally I think their work on MI looks good. And yeah a couple of the guys are cute. But I'll tell you what, there are a couple of very clever businessmen in that group. And I give them big kudos for that. The grilled cheese episode cracked me up. That woman should have spent the sale of her sandwich on dentures though, not a tattoo on her boob. But no way would I travel there for a tattoo....
Seriously, Garver is a great artist. I've seen some of his work on the show and I find it simply overwhelming. If I had the chance of being anywhere near Miami, you can be sure I'd go to Miami Ink without hesitation. I'd even go for a full body tattoo if I could have an appointment with Garver each week or so. Kat is excellent too. She can do hyper realistic tattoos and this is not given to anybody. She's gifted! And stunningly cute as well ;o) Having some of her work on me would be like fullfilling a fantasy...
I caught the end of a Miami Ink episode about two weeks ago and a girl got a backpiece consisting of stargazer lillies. It went from the top of her right shoulder down to her lower back. Does anybody know what episode it was or where I may be able to find a picture of it. I want to add to my piece and I liked the concept. Thanks! [email removed]
They're all acomplished artists in their own way, and I'd have no problem having Chris Garver do a tattoo on me because I like his style, and if you want to get a tattoo by any of them, there's nothing wrong with that, but do it because you appreciate their talents, not because they're on TV.
I have just got back from a long weekend in South Beach. I have wanted to get another tattoo for over a year now and didn't plan to get one this weekend but when I saw the Miami Ink shop, I thought why not, a story behind the tattoo as well has getting a good one done. Yes its expensive, I paid $950 for 2 hours work, but it is amazing and they do make you feel welcome and treat you super cool. The problem is, is that there is 30 - 40 people just hanging around asking dumb questions and wanting autographs and photos etc. But once your past all that and getting the tattoo designed/done they really make you feel good. It was the best tattoo I have ever got and a great experience and I can say that I have had a tattoo at Miami Ink by one of the guys on the show. You get what you pay for.
well, i heard from a very good source, that it cost $100.00 an inch, and you have to get picked for ther show, ( i know that because i interviewd for it, my friend got it) but, i found that finding someone local is so mush better, you get a relationship out of it, they begin to know the you that you want on the outside, lisa schmolt has done most if not all of my work, and she is now a great friend... she knows what i do want and what i wouldn't want ten years from now, that is all i can say, but, do what you feel inside, thats the way to go with it good luck!!
Omi did my tattoo before this whole Miami Ink craze! He did a great job and it was a decent price! I went to him by total coincidence...and I'm glad it was before he became who he is now!
Lisa Schmoldt is awesome, so is Dee Dee, Litos, Pooch, and a zillion other artists in Florida. You do get what you pay for, and if paying to be on TV floats your boat, by all means. But paying to be on TV does not insure you are paying to get a tattoo worth $500 an hour. Indeed, you dont have that good a chance of getting a good tattoo there especially when you consider the many artists that aren't on TV that work at the studio. Not knocking em, hell, there are people that will pay $500 an hour and they should get it while its hot I guess.
I really like Garver's work and im thinking about getting a tattoo buy him, because ive gone to the local shops and no one can draw my goalie mask does anyone know a good shop in Missouri? or an excellent artist that does good with details?
No, I've seen some of the work that they've done, The coloring is off, the lines are crooked, I'm happier getting a tattoo by local artists.
For the people who are wondering where Chris Garver's studio is (Kat Von D also works there when they aren't shooting for Miami Ink): True Tattoo 1628 N. Cahuenga Blvd. Hollywood, CA 90028 Ph. 323.462.4745
I THINK ITS A BUNCH OF BULLSHIT BECAUSE MIAMI INK IS GOOD IN ALL BUT STILL THERE IS ALOT BETTER TATTOO ARTISTS OUT THERE THAT DO JUST AS GOOD AS THEM BUT DONT GET RECONIZED FOR THERE WORK
IMO Garver is one of the best out there, I would get a tattoo by him in Miami, or you backyard..............
In my opinion Chris is a very talented artist whos hype is blown way out of proportion because of TV. There really are many many artists just as talented who dont have a thousand wannabees a minute paying mad out of control cash... I wouldnt get a tattoo from him, but I guess at this point Im being very picky...
i think the networks should move it on to a new shop.. maybe in philly or NYC. or San Fran or hawaii or some where besides miami beach and ""MIAMI STINK""" and that d-bag AMI the homo
I personally would go get a tattoo at Miami Ink... I just have to save up. I know a few people who know a few of the artists on there. yes they are not the best in the world, and I dont want to go to them just because of the television show... Everyone here makes valid points. Miami Ink does have it's flaws and has helped the industry but as well in a way made some of the competitors lose money. That's how it works. Its unfortunete, but it's hard to go back from what it once was. Everyone's opinion will differ. Ive seen both bad and amazing tattoos done at Miami Ink. But yes, it's pricey...but ive known a few people who have gotten tattooed there, you get what you are paid for. if you bring in a design and ask them to create something from that, and if you say I want something that will only be 300 bucks (then add the tip) (price is only an example)---then they know what they have to work with. Make you an amaing tattoo for that price. I also heard that Ami tattoos out of his house as well. I've heard quite a few stories... But overall its a great shop, same with Chris Garvers own tattoo place, they have some great artists there as well. In my opinion look around before going to miami ink.. unless you want a portrait from kat... shes teh best ive seen (in my eyes).... if you have your mind set on miami ink... then make it happen!
i want to get a tattoo of my son becuese he is with his dad right know and i made some bad disions in my life and i want a tattoo of him to remind me what i am fighting for because sometimes i get discouranged and forget i had him four four years of his life and somtimes i get drown away from what i am fighting for so if anynoe could please get back to me its been a long hard roll in my life and i will never give up he is my best friend
I have wanted a tattoo for 4 years but haven't found any of those "fabulous artists" talked about on this board. Any recommendations for talented artists in the Eastern North Carolina, Virginia Beach, Va area? I am new to this area. Where I lived before, every artist I talked to was rude/condescending or examples of their work were.... well, let's just say "not good". Personally, Chris Garver can tattoo me where ever he wants!
Hey, have you looked through our tattoos gallery? While Kat and Garver are very talented, there are many artists in these galleries whos talents, well, they speak for themselves. Check out our North Carolina tattoo gallery and Virginia tattoo gallery. There are also a few conventions there every year that bring in even more talented folks. If you cant find anyone you think is as talented as the folks on TV, then I dare say its not the quality of tattoo thats attracting you. What type of tattoo are you thinking about?
Look, when it comes right down to it, its a matter of personal preferance. Sure, the are many, many, many great tattoo artist out there. Miami Ink has a couple of them, but I thinks its best for someone to do what seems right to them. Study your artist, look at his work, and make your choice. its all up to you, its your body. Your the one that will have to live it all your life, even if its a grilled cheese sandwich! Let your conceinse be your guide, but put some work into it, dont just go someplace cause your friend said it was good, or its on tv. Research and Decide.
This thought crossed my mind. As I was reading www.irezumi.us/eg. When I was in the Koi part, I thought that why dont people get any other tattoos than Koi? Of course they do, but its by far the most popular desing, ewen if there are over 20 other ones. Of course one of the reasons are that it represents positive things and succes. But why dont people who know more about this art and know what it holds in it, why dont they try to use a show like Miami Ink to spread the word? Why do everyone just bitch about the show, and dont do something positive with it, like I believe JOE is trying to do know. And I hope he succeeds and dont get put it the wrong light. But if people complain that it gives tattoo a bad name etc. why dont you go to the show and get for example something done from Garver, that doesnt get shown in there often. Like Baku or Kirin? And then explain what they mean etc. That way you could show the depth of tattoos and the cultural meaning of some designs, instead of just complaining. And if you say that because "Garver isnt good enough", then that isnt a reason. He is good, but not nessecarily the style that you like. Theres a difference.
I would love to go to Miami Ink and get a tattoo. My partner Ian has told me when i complete my Nurse training we will go to Miami Ink and see Chris/ Cat to get my tattoo dream done.
anyone who is wanting Kat or Garver to do work on them will have to travel to Hollywood to True Tattoo. Kat is also opening her own shop In the same area. If you would like to see their portfolios online go to Truetatto.net.
Hey Original Poster(jonjon) I second the suggestion to go see Dee Dee!!!!! She is working on my very special flower piece...and I drove 3 hours to get it...VERY worth it.
Hey, Dee Dee is coming back to New England this summer. She is an amazing custom tattoo artist, I had her work on my toucan last year, very happy!
I know I saw on her website :) I will be making an appointment to have some more work done!!!!!
Dee Dees work is the best!!
Hey there, I manage a tattoo shop in Brisbane Australia, don't know if any of you guys have heard of Little Mick, he is very well known down under. I adore Kat's work, I think she is great, as a female artist. As for having to get CASTED to get a tattoo??? FOR REAL?? I am a collector and have some great work by some of the best aussie artists, but was a bit keen on the Miami Ink thing, but , to the dude who was making 5000.00 now only 3000.00 per week, geeezzz mate, come and live in Australia!!! I didn't think the shop would be such a wank, I will forget the idea I think!! LOL Jack Ruby is comming over here soon, I might go that way!!!
If people are going to fly across the world to hang with the worlds most talented artists you should buy tickets to the Hell City Tattoo Festival which will be in Pheonix AZ this year. Its at an amazing hotel with a line-up of artists that is simply insane. Instead of maybe seeing the TV folks (though I bet a few attend so you will see em) there are dozens and dozens of other top tier artists putting out amazing work. Durb and company's attention to detail make it one of my favorite conventions every year.
Just an FYI, I tried to contact Garver at his shop here in CA and was notified by a standard reply email that said: At this time Chris is no longer taking any more appointments in Hollywood, California due to the fact that he is no longer associated with True Tattoo. He is spending majority of his time in Miami for the show. Due to his unpredictable schedule with Miami Ink and his situation with the shop in LA it is difficult to know when he will be back in LA. Therefore, the waiting list is closed! If you want a tattoo from Chris in Miami you have to go through casting: miami-ink-casting.com Here is a list of recommendations: CALIFORNIA Jack Rudy: Good Time Charlie's Tattooland - Anaheim, CA Tim Hendricks: Spotlight Tattoo - Hollywood, CA www.saltwatertattoo.com Clay Decker, Mike Suarez, Taku: True Tattoo - Hollywood, CA Jeff Rassier: Black Heart Tattoo - San Francisco, CA www.blackhearttattoosf.com OHIO Kore Flatmo: Plurabella, Cincinnati, OH www.silkyflycatcher.net ILLINOIS (Chicago) Keith Underwood: Taylor Street Tattoo TEXAS Oliver Peck, Dean Williams: Elm Street Tattoo www.elmstreettattoo.com NEW YORK NY Adorned, Manhattan NY, www.nyadorned.com Fly Rite Tattoo, Brooklyn NY www.flyrite-tattoo.com MARYLAND Read Street Tattoo, Baltimore MD www.readstreettattoo.com CANADA The Dutchman Tattoos, New Westminster Canada (west coast) www.dutchman-tattoos.com Steve Moore, Canada (who knows) www.getmooretattoos.com If you are interested in a Chris Garver tattoo machine please go to dringenbergtattoo.com . All machines are made to order. Have fun!! Chris will not be traveling any time soon due to his filming schedule. ***I am hoping to go to MI this summer to try and get in w/ Chris. Not interested in the show. He just is an amazing artist and I would feel honored to have a piece of work from him. Hope it works :)
Why go to Miami? Kat's coming back to LA and Taku at True Tattoo in Hollywood is as good if not better than Chris Graver.
Were abouts in LA does kat work??
And whats the address of miami ink? because i am also thinking about getting a tattoo and the quality of artists in america is a lot higher than that of artists in england so i was thinking about travelling for one
From what I see on TV the quality of most of the artists is great! However they do have a tendency to completely change a tattoo you want. I've seen them even blank refuse to do a tattoo a customer had drawn themselves. If you want their ideas then go for it, the only work I question is the asian apprentise guy. If you want a tatoo you've designed, maybe go elsewhere.
The US is full of damn fine artists.
i just need a really good tattooist that can do my own design
Wow do I wish I had read this thread about two months ago. I got a wild idea to treat my sister to a trip to Miami for a tattoo at MI as a surprise graduation present. We did NOT want to be on the show, however. We've had fun in Miami but went tonight to get our tattoos and discovered a) the (to my mind unreasonable) expense, b) that the guys who would actually be tattooing us were people I hadn't heard of. We weren't informed of this until they started tattooing the people in front of us - I guess we were naive enough to assume we might have access to the guys on the show themselves. We weren't offered the portfolios of the new guys until we complained that we didn't know who they were. The shop manager, while very professional, said we were the first people in three years to complain about not getting tattoos by the guys themselves and/or not being informed that the tattoos would be done by other people, and made it clear that it was out of the ordinary that we were even asking for their portfolios. I understand that for them to be working there Ami and the guys must have confidence in their abilities, but it is my body (and my little sister's!!) that these guys are putting ink on for the rest of all time, and call me silly but I think I ought to be familiar with a person's work before that happens. Obviously there are plenty of people who just walk into a shop and get a tattoo they pick out of a book but I don't think the staff at Miami Ink should have such sublime confidence in their reputation that they presume everyone is going to be ok with that, ESPECIALLY at those prices. Anyway, the upshot is that you apparently CANNOT get a tattoo by Ami, Garver, Nunez or Darren anymore UNLESS you are on the show, or know how to get Ami to work on you out of his house, or Garver to put you on his elusive, exclusive waiting list. Kat can apparently be found at least part time in Dallas at Elm Street Tattoos, in addition to her shop in Hollywood for which I do not have the info. I've enjoyed the show (except I think Ami should've grown up a little as a person and as a boss instead of firing Kat) and it's taught me some of the fundamentals of tattooing and provoked me to think about and ultimately decide on what my next one will be. But it's certainly true that we have to remember that this is edited for television and does not always reflect reality. My sister and I left MI with my money refunded (very courteously by the shop manager) and we're going to look into some of the other recommended South Beach artists before we leave, and at home also. My advice to everyone is FORGET about Miami Ink for any serious tattoos. They have gotten too popular for any joe schmoe amateur tattoo fan to have access to anything but they space that they might have recently occupied. One might even say too popular for their own good. If you want to get something out of a book by someone you haven't heard of who is *probably* a skilled tattooist, and pay obscenely inflated prices for the privilege of doing so at 1344 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, FL, then please go stand in line there.
if im going to spend money like that and have to travel im going to mike devries hes the best up and coming there is and better than most of the vets his work is just sick
I would totally get my first tattoo done by one of the Miami Ink crew members. They totally rock. I am looking to travel there just to get my tattoo done. They have talent that just amazes me. Keep on making awesome art guys.
Sandra I think you would be happy to know that there is a world class artist in your town too. Kurt Wiscombe is one of the best tattooo artists in the world His homepage And I would think that if you would ask for example Chris Garver, he would say that save the traveling money and put it on a tattoo from Kurt :) If I would live in Canada, I propably wouldnt travel for tattoos (at least out from the country) just to get skilled artists, because there are many world class artists in your country. Here are other Canadian wonders Steve Moore in Vancouver Strange World Tattoo in Calgary Adam Sky in Vancouver Maria from Atomic Zombie tattoo in Edmonton
HELL NO! KAT was the only thing they had going for them....just look at thier portfolios!
The only way to get tattoo'd by the Miami Ink Crew is to go to a Casting. Yes, Miami Ink is no longer reality they cast their shows.
Hi, First off... If you walk in off the streets and Miami Ink is actually opened then you will get regular artists not the starts of the show. DOn't assume you will walk in and get darren, ami etc. They only Tat for the show... Secondly, I think Darren is an excellent Artist. I jsut seen some work he did and it was totally amazing. It's a show so the people that say they walked in and didn't wan t to be on TV are bull crappin. They don't have tv production going on when shop is open to public and you go thru a casting call to get on show. So when you visit Miami Ink on the weekends or nights then you can get a tattoo and your paying for the name of Miami Ink but you will not be on TV and your not being filmed... Hope this clears up some stuff being said....
im so over the hype already. personally i do like garvers work, but not enough to fly across the country to get it and pay easily twice as much as other artists who blow him outta the water. nikko in apple valley ca. or kore flatmo will be gettin my hard earned cash. hell even paolo here in scottsdale at divinity tattoo is just as good as garver in my opinion and i don't have to buy a plane ticket. anyway, i like that miami ink is bringin tattooing to a new audience that was completely oblivious to tattooing prior to its start, but the hype has gotten way overblown. everyone is hailin the miami ink crews as tattooing gods, but none of em hold a candle to a bob tyrell, guy atchison, paul booth, kore flatmo...........the list is too long to get into
Im going to be visiting miami in the new year, how can i make an appointment does miami ink have a website or email or tel?? HELP!
Some folks are willing to pay for 'marketing' or the packaging rather than what's inside -- the substance, the artistry. I know artists at $140 -$150 an hour that would embarass even Chris Garver, much less the other guys... I like Chris Garver and his work. Ami does some good stuff, Darren, too. But aint no way I am paying their rate!
Hey, this is a shameless plug... If you have flown or are thinking of flying to Miami Ink for a tattoo vacation, you might want to consider flying to New England next October where 60+ of the world finest will be tattooing in one very nice resort in the hills of western mass during peak leaf season. rooms are only $109 a night, and the 2 and 3 bedroom condos are really really nice (some even have bunk beds!).
Any sugesstions for dallas tx?
So my dears! miami ink..??? hm....bla-bla... Just take a look at the country like Hungary in Europe...Every second redneck tattooer is better than all Miami crew 2gether.... belive me.....
Check out our TExas tattoo galleries. Not to disrespect the crew of the show, but its TV, and reality is there are a lot of very talented tattoo artists who arent on TV near everyone.
True that! I know some @#$%ing sick artists who are in Hungry... the eastern block seems to have a lot of talent coming out of it lately. Ok, fine, if you dont fly to new england next year, fly to hungry! I'll be there in a few years making the rounds I hope...
FUCK MIAMI INK!!! that shop is bullshit...my first tattoo was done at merlin's on west dixie about 17 years ago, and i've had several done in that shop that used to be merlin's on south beach. those guys are overpriced glory whores. it's half the quality of work for double the price. i'd put those guys on the shit list just over lou's tattoo and never look back. if you wanna be one of these fags on TV getting your first tattoo with some fucking sob story, yeah, write miami ink a letter and go. i've moved on, Colorfast studio is my latest stop in broward. great prices, great ppl. other than that, i get my work done in NorCal, Scotty Bizzare tattoos.
These Tatoos Are Worth Every Bit Of Money U Can Spend!!!!
Do Ya Ave To Make An Appointment!!???
Hello all, I'm from Singapore and Im turning 21 soon. i've been meaning to get my first tattoo - a black n grey portrait sort for some time and i was considering making a trip to the US end of this year or something to get Kat to do my tattoo. However, I have no clue where is she normally is since she now has her own programme - LA Ink and all. Does anyone have any clue on how I could actually get my tattoo done is that trip im going to make? I dont know anyone is the US and I'll prabably be dragging one of my girlfriends along, so I dont want it to be a wasted trip.. Also, if anyone of you guys know anyone else who is really trust-worthy and can do an awesome black n grey tattoo, also give me the details. Please also shed some light on possible cost of the tattoo.. assuming it would be either about 15"x10" or 8"x7". Sincere replies are welcome to my email address. Thanks in advance!

Hi,i went to florida 4 months ago to get a tattoo in miami ink, when i landed in orlando i rang miami ink and asked if i travelled to miami from orlando would i be able to get tattooed, the answer was a big yes no problem, where open.wow all that way from ireland to get a tattoo were waitng for you.so the next day i rang just to confirm and my fiance and i got a greyhound bus(6hr drive but thought it would be a great way of seeing the states)when we got to miami we got a taxi to the shop and what happened???a very rude lady refused us entry as they where filming,i said o.k,no problem, when could we go in to get tattooed?she said "i dont know sir, come back in few hrs...maybe 1:30am".so we asked her if she could recomend a hotel as id travelled from ireland to get tattooed, she said "no i cant"and walked away.i waited for 5hours and went back she still said "NO".she said it was not her problem,it was mine, wouldnt even listen to me,and i wasnt going to get into a full scale arguement on the street(although it was close)so after all that we flew back to orlando that day.the whole experience cost me 1300dollars(just that miami trip,a total of 20hours)what a let down, why say come to us..sure no problem we will tattoo you..and then do that to me..was a big big fan of all the lads there..just goes to show that there more into the programme than the art its-self..just my experience im sharing
Man, its no secret those studios are there for the $$$ and not the tattoo experiance. Ive said it before and I'll say it again, if you are thinking of traveling to Maimi, especially internationally, I would reconsider and think about going to the Hell City Tattoo Festival, the Paradise Tattoo Gathering, or one of the other man conventions where you will see a lot of amazing tattoo artists in one place... Spend the same money, get your tattoo from a professional, and have a weekend of tattoo fun! Beats Maimi any day o the week if you ask me, ha. I would travel to Florida to get tattooed by Dee Dee Seruga though! There are a lot of great artists in florida... next time maybe check the florida tattoo gallery to pick your artist... Sorry you had a bad experience, but the lesson you learned is TV SUCKS and LIES to you. Cheers, we will be in Wales this August for the Tattoo Jam convention, there will be a lot of amazing artists there, your probably pretty lucky you didnt get tattooed there, the talent at the Tattoo Jam is world class!
i am a hr away from theese guys there work is not the best but it is clean and solid there is a shop down the street that rocks called mosh pitt amazing
if you want me to be honest i think they are good but there is better. I would suggest if you have the money to contact rev. chucky hayes in arizona. the address is 111 W. Birch Ave. Flagstaff, AZ 86004 Tel. 928-774-3646 He is an amazing artist and he is worth the money spent!!!!!!!!!
Maybe, If Troy Lane was all booked up.
i would love to be tattoo'd by any of the guy's (nd kat) from miami ink, i thin k their amazing, nd i watch their show every day. i already have a tattoo going up my spine. but i would love to just have one by them!!! xx
Wales, eh? Save your money and go to the Tattoo Jam, many of the best artists in the world will be there. Probably some of the TV people too...

Lots of people love the show and yes the guys are cute and Kat too of course and lots of people love the artists but i would listen greatly to the people that have actually visited the shop before considering whether to go or not. I really wanted a full back original tattoo by chris garver as i love his artistry but i will not pay over the odds for it or be on the show. You should visit many shops and speak to other artists, see their work and get a clear idea of what you are looking for and you will know the right artist for you when you see them! Even visiting web sites and seeing the work done by true people in the shop will give you an idea! Remember this piece of art will be on you forever and should be done by someone whos work you admire and respect! So be patient, spontanaety is great but when it comes to a tattoo it should feel right! Take your time and do your homework and get the great tattoo you want and deserve by the best person you can find for the job! take care and happy tattooing!!! :D mc ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- And since some of the posts were made a long time ago heres a little update: For years, Garver owned a renamed tattoo shop in Hollywood, CA, called True Tattoo, in partnership with fellow tattooer Clay Decker. In April of 2007, he announced he was leaving that shop and relocating to Miami full-time. Kat also has her own shop now and her own show! Miami ink tattoo shop address and phone number is: 1370 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139 (305) 531-4556
well my opinion is u should because i know for a fact that they are the only best tatto artis out here, your not goint to waist your time at all,so if i was u ill go for it!!!
I wpould get a tattoo at miami ink i live in England i watch the show all the time and i think there great i already have some tattoo's.
Ami James and Chris Garver are legends in the tattoo industry; even people who aren't into tattoos know who they are. I would think it an honour to get a tattoo by Ami. I have a fair few tattoos but i'm saving my back so Ami can just go freestyle on it.
Legends? really??? Usually you need to be a lot older to reach legends status. TV made them very popular, and chris is a very good tattooer when he doesnt have producers picking the tattoos he does. check out our TattooNOW TV for new art and tattoo videos nearly every day!
Hi there! I'm going to Miami on vacation this summer and Im thinking of getting a tattoo while Im there. No, Im not thinking of getting it done at "Miami Ink". :) Could anyone give me some recommedations to good tattoo studios in Miami? Preferbly "easy-to-find-for-a-dumb-tourist" studios.
a good tattooist down in london if ever your looking for one would be dan gold or the bloke that he works with who did david beckhams eagle wings. their work is totaly amazing and would match the standard of any tattooist in miami ink. the shop you would be looking for would be london ink. they might be a bit ricey but well worth it!!!
Cray 8's in london brilliant work

Hi everyone, I live in Scotland but am majorly considering taking a trip 2 Miami later this year to get a tattoo. I was wondering if anyone knew a contact address or email for any of the guys from Miami ink or the tatoo parlours address? Thank you !
Its a pimp-hooker relationship simple as that, I know too many portraite quality, world class, unknown and starving artists out there that could blow any of them outside of perhaps Garver off the plate on a crawling drunk, Ink whores comes to mind. dont anyone out there prostitute themselves on the "fame game", with a little reasurch, there are plenty of high quality artists out there that actually care about what they do, and appreciate their clientell, fuck man, these ppl pay our bills and feed our kids, they DESERVE to be appreciated, ive seen alot in the past 30 yrs in my career and ive seen ppl pass up rockstar artists and go to "kitchen scratchers" because they were treated with a little respect...angry, yes...jealous, maybe, but because Ive seen way too many deserving artsists who have paid their dues fall by the wayside because of flash and glam like these whores were talking about here, wake up ppl, it is what it is...TV

Hi I love Kat and would like to get a tatoo done by her. Does anyone know how i go about contacting her? I live in South Africa but have a green card so i can enter the USA with ease. My problem is how to make an appointment- any advice?
next year im flying all the way to Miami from the netherlands to get a Tatoo from AMI!!!
I know Maimi Ink in on TV and all, but we have a ton of artists come through here, and it may not be south beach, but easthampton ma is a very nice place to take a tattoo vacation! Over 50 artists a year, and some have even tattooed the tv stahs... we also host a tattoo convention/getaway that many international collectors come to... check it out... Again, not Maimi Ink or South Beach, but you all know that TV lies to you, dont find out the hard way!!
Julia, u asked about the adress...just check out a litle upstairs... a felow posted it, plus their fone number!!! Hope it helps...good luck!
Hey there, Does anyone knows how much it costs to get a tatoo that's the same as a picture? I'm in New York in October and I deffinatly want one from Miami Ink, so I travel to Miami.
ya dude you should go there i watch there show every day they have a gift. so ya go there they will not mess it up. bye
i would like to get a tattoo when iam in miami for a week i will be there on the 4 of april
Of course I would, as a matter a fact I will get one this coming easter vacations. This people are the best.
I live in miami and i must say Miami Ink or love hate as it is now called, is more expensive than an average shop anywhere else in miami. But remember you get what you pay for and a tattoo is foreever. When you go to miai ink you know your going to get a quality tattoo. I personally always get tattoed by James Hamilton. His prices are reasonable and the man is a straight up artist. I gave him an idea and he comes up with some sick are work, and it looks even better when he tattoos it. I would recomend him to everyone the man is talented.

if you feel like paying 2,000 for a tattoo that woulld cost you 350 in anouther shop then go ahead. they are not the best. they are just good, there are plenty of other good shops out there that do not get in the limelight of televison. but its your money you do what you want
